Lighthouse Marina Resort team tops Subic Bay Recyclables Regatta
Sep 07, 2014

SUBIC BAY - Harbor Point Ayala Mall, in cooperation with The Lighthouse Marina Resort Legacy Foundation (LMRLF) and together with the Saturday Afternoon Gentlemen Sailing (SAGS) Club, held the Recyclables Regatta last Saturday, September 6, 2014, at the beachfront of The Lighthouse Marina Resort.

The Recyclables Regatta is a race of watercrafts made from at least 80% recycled materials (without restrictions on shapes and steering mechanism), paddled in a point-to-point 100-meter course along Subic Bay. Teams were encouraged to use their creativity by taking items that would have otherwise been thrown in the garbage.

"The purpose of this event is to heighten awareness about plastic pollution and integrate creative outlets that will further educate the public," explained Argee Gomez, marketing manager of Harbor Point Mall.

Mechanics consisted of guidelines for building materials for the crafts, which included plastic soda or milk containers, old inner tire tubes, and reused styrofoam. The creation had be a human-powered floating vessel to be rowed by two persons and without any motors and working sails. Any debris left in the water also had to be retrieved by the participants in order to finish the race.

This head-to-head match race involved several teams representing a combination of private and public sectors. Although the weather kept alternating between rainy and sunny, contestants still paddled and finished the course.

Coming in first was The Lighthouse Marina Resort team finishing at 6:53 minutes, followed by Batang Gapo New TV with 9:31 minutes, Olongapo City Red Cross with 10:43 minutes, two teams of Ayala Malls Harbor Point at 13:18 and 15:19 minutes, SBMA Fire Department at 18:29 minutes, and Terrace Hotel/Bayfront Hotel at 23:50 minutes.

Despite the ranking, all teams were winners, since the top three finishers were given major prizes courtesy of Harbor Point Mall, while all other participants went home with consolation prizes provided by LMRLF.

The event is in line with International Coastal Cleanup - Zambales (ICCZ) on September 20, 2014.
