Subic Bay to host Commodore's Cup Regatta
Apr 14, 2014

SUBIC BAY FREEPORT - Asia's principal blue-water classic, The China Sea Race, from Hong Kong to the Philippines, running for the 27th time, will again finish in Subic Bay's beautiful natural harbor this April.

Since 1962, international yachtsmen and women have pitted themselves every second year against the cold rough seas off Hong Kong at the start of the race, and the languid, sun-drenched slope of the windless days off the coast of the Philippines.

This year, for the first time, the Commodore's Cup programme kicks off on April 19, 2014, with Flying Fifteen and dinghy racing in the bay, and ends on April 22. Next will be keelboats and multihulls from April 22 to 26.

For years the race finished at the Manila Yacht Club, but as Subic Bay developed as a freeport and tourist destination, it was favored over Manila Bay. Although Punta Fuego was chosen in 2002, the race since then has always finished in Subic Bay.

The inshore races following the 2014 Rolex China Sea Race will be the seventh Commodore's Cup, organized by the Saturday Afternoon Gentleman's Sailing (SAGS) club of Subic Bay under the auspices of the Philippine Sailing Association in conjunction with The Lighthouse Marina Resort, Watercraft Ventures, Inc., Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Philippine Coast Guard.

Racing in Subic Bay usually is entertaining because of the shifting wind. With the clear waters of the Bay ringed by beautiful mountains, Subic Bay is large enough to develop its own micro-climate that almost always results in useful local but shifty breezes lasting all afternoon.

Ashore, Subic Bay offers marina facilities at the Subic Bay Yacht Club, a 40-ton travel hoist and boat repair facilities, a chandlery and a number of duty free supermarkets, aside from many hotels, restaurants and bars for entertaining The welcoming party and the awarding ceremony will held at The Lighthouse Marina Resort Beachfront.

For inquiries and reservations, interested parties may contact The Lighthouse Marina Resort at its Subic Line (Tel/Fax) No. (+63 47) 252.5000 or (+63 47) 252.7545 or visit its website: www.lighthousesubic.com.
